Patents

Invent it: patents

A patent is expensive and slow, and not every invention needs one. We'll tell you whether yours does before you spend on an application.

Arash Karimi trained as a mechanical engineer, and he drafts applications for hardware, consumer products and software. Most clients start with a provisional application: it holds your filing date for a year while you build, test and raise money, at a fraction of the cost of a full application.

Fees

How patent fees work

A flat fee for each step, quoted in writing before we start.

  • Patentability opinion

A search of earlier patents and a written view of your chances.

    • Search of patents and publications

    • Written opinion

    • Call to walk through it

  • Provisional application

Holds your filing date for twelve months. The fee follows how complex the invention is and how many drawings it needs.

    • Written description drafted with you

    • Informal drawings

    • Filed with the USPTO

  • Utility application

The full application, with claims, drafted and filed. The fee follows the number of claims and drawings; office action responses are quoted separately.

    • Claims and specification

    • Formal drawings

    • Filed with the USPTO

Government filing fees are separate, passed through at cost and listed on your quote.

How it works

From first call to patent pending

  1. 01

Step 1: Show us the invention

A sketch, a prototype or a demo. We sign a confidentiality letter first if you'd like one.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Decide together

We tell you what's likely patentable, and what it would cost to find out.

  3. 03

    Step 3: File a provisional

Your filing date is set, and you can say "patent pending".

  4. 04

Step 4: Convert within a year

We turn the provisional into a full application before the year runs out.

Questions

Questions about patents

Can I show my invention at a trade show first?

Talk to us before you do. A public showing can start a deadline in the U.S. and end your rights in many other countries.

What does "patent pending" mean?

That an application is on file. It warns copiers but doesn't let you stop them until a patent issues.

How much does a patent cost in total?

For most utility patents, the drafting, government fees and responses add up over several years, and the total depends on what the examiner raises. We quote each step before it starts.

Ready to file a provisional?

Tell us what you're working on. We'll reply with a flat-fee quote.

Please don't send confidential details until we've checked for conflicts.
